NO CHOICE BUT DIRTY WATER

An estimated 842,000 people die each year from diseases caused by unclean water, inadequate sanitation, and poor hygiene habits. The majority of these are children in developing countries. Providing clean water, coupled with health and hygiene education, is perhaps the most effective measure we can take in preventing infectious disease. Samaritan’s Purse works around the world to provide clean water and promote safe hygiene practices.

HOW THE BIOSAND WATER FILTER WORKS

Find out more

The Biosand Filter

1

Dirty water is poured into the top.

2

The dirty water is first filtered through a biological layer that traps organic material, parasites, microorganisms and viruses.

3

The water then flows through several layers of sand and gravel, trapping any remaining bacteria.

4

Clean water is forced out of the spout every time dirty water is poured through the top. Each filter can produce approx. 40 litres of safe water an hour.

i

Filters can last for decades as there are no moving parts, no power supply is needed and they are made of concrete.

Clean Water

Samaritan's Purse works with communities to install and rehabilitate hand-dug wells and boreholes. After a project is completed, we offer maintenance training to community members who will assume responsibility for upkeep.

Public Toilets

Properly built latrines greatly reduce the spread of waterborne disease and prevent diarrhea, one of the leading causes of death among children.

EMPOWERING CHURCHES

Health and hygiene education is one of the best ways to reduce illness. We conduct workshops that focus on personal hygiene, hand washing with soap, food preparation, household sanitation, and proper waste disposal, whilst sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ.
