Millions of people in the war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are either displaced within the country, living as refugees from neighbouring countries, in desperate need of basic necessities, or in a seemingly hopeless state of food crisis. Since 2011, Samaritan’s Purse has been on the ground providing relief and sharing the hope of Christ.

In 2023, Samaritan’s Purse is focusing on urgent water and hygiene needs for five longstanding ministry partner health facilities and their surrounding communities. Lack of access to clean water has led to illness, disease, malnutrition and even premature death for patients, while also hindering the impact of our medical work in the area.

Through our water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programming, our teams are planning to improve access to clean water and sanitation infrastructure in these areas by drilling borehole wells, installing latrines and showers, providing much-needed hygiene supplies, and training health workers and community members on hygiene best practices. In every aspect of the project, we will share the Gospel and communicate the intrinsic value God has placed in each individual.

Clean Water Impacts Lives

Ruth would wake her children at 4am so that they could join her in carrying buckets and jerry cans to collect water, several kilometres from home. Drinking dirty water became the only option for Ruth, leading to ongoing illness in her family.

Samaritan’s Purse became an answer to prayer in Ruth’s community as our team restored a dozen nearby springs, constructed latrines near schools and churches, and raised awareness about the importance of hand-washing and other hygienic practices.

The hours that Ruth saved each day meant she could now devote more time to her children and their education, while also carrying out much-needed work in her village.

“This project changed my life spiritually. Samaritan’s Purse would preach to us and share the Gospel… One day in particular, I was blessed with a message from Isaiah… I finally understood the way in which sins separate us from God, and I gave my life to Jesus Christ.”

Samaritan’s Purse is looking to run a similar project in the DRC that could benefit over 68,000 people, just like Ruth.
