This week Samaritan’s Purse Chief Operating Officer Edward Graham and Vice President Mike Pence traveled to Ukraine to view Samaritan’s Purse ongoing relief efforts and encourage our staff members. While in the war-torn nation, they also met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“Thank you for your leadership as president,” Pence told Zelenskyy. “I want you to know that millions of Americans pray for you and your brave soldiers every day.”

Graham and Pence visited three locations outside of Kyiv to see how God is using Samaritan‘s Purse to encourage residents by repairing homes and replacing roofs. The people of Bucha, Irpin, and Moschun endured Russian occupation last year and are still suffering from the atrocities committed.

“You prayed and you weren’t afraid,” reiterated Pence as he spoke with one homeowner. “Your bravery inspires me.”

To honor the sacrifices of many, Graham and Pence laid a wreath at one mass grave site.

“We do all this because we love them, but more importantly, because Jesus Christ loves them,” Graham said about the motivation behind our work in war-ravaged Ukraine. “That’s what we want the people of Ukraine to know—that Jesus has not forsaken them.”

Through our network of local church partners, Samaritan’s Purse has delivered 173 million pounds of food and produced 15 million gallons of clean water for those devastated by the war. Together with the medical care, emergency shelter materials, and other relief provided, we have served 9 million people in Jesus’ Name.

“At Samaritan’s Purse, when people fall into the ditches of life, we are there to help them out of it,” said our Ukraine Country Director Ryan Lane. “This is who we are and this is what we are doing in Ukraine.”

Please continue to lift up the residents who are suffering from war. As Edward Graham said, “Pray for peace that only Jesus Christ can bring.”
