Samaritan's Purse responds to earthquake in Haiti

Samaritan's Purse UK is sending £30,000 in emergency relief and has placed three disaster-trained volunteers on standby to join the existing global Samaritan’s Purse Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) helping survivors of the recent earthquake in Haiti.

The most impoverished in the Western hemisphere, Haiti was struck by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake on Tuesday, with the worst damage in and around the capital Port-au-Prince.

Reports indicate that the city has been devastated, with government officials estimating hundreds of thousands dead. The UN headquarters and several Haitian government buildings – including the presidential palace – have been completely destroyed.

A 13-member disaster assistance team has already been mobilised by Samaritan’s Purse, flying out from Florida, USA, and arriving in Port-au-Prince on Wednesday evening to assist survivors of the earthquake.  As well as overseeing the distribution of emergency supplies, including hundreds of rolls of plastic shelter materials, hygiene kits, and water purification kits, the team is also partnering with a medical ministry, who will shortly be sending six doctors to join in the response.

On-the-ground partners, who previously supported the efforts of Samaritan's Purse in responding to last year's hurricane, have already mobilised around 60 volunteers to distribute temporary shelter kits remaining from the last disaster.
