Samaritan's Purse to provide aid to refugees from Ivory Coast
Samaritan’s Purse is to provide immediate humanitarian relief to tens of thousands of refugees caught up in the current conflict in Ivory Coast.
The organisation is committing £30,000 to provide clean water and sanitation for the 100,000 refugees caught up in the politically motivated civil war.
Along with other aid agencies, experts from Samaritan's Purse are already on the ground in Liberia to assist this growing refugee crisis and get safe water and sanitation into the key areas, whilst the conflict in Ivory Coast shows no immediate signs of stopping.
The organisation is coordinating its efforts in partnership with a network of 70 churches in Liberia to assist the Ivorian refugees along the border. The immediate plan is to assess the most appropriate locations to drill a number of boreholes to provide a steady supply of clean water and to construct latrines which will help prevent the spread of water borne disease.
Simon Barrington, Executive Director of Samaritan's Purse (UK) comments:
"Civilians continue to bear the brunt of this conflict, with tens of thousands of displaced people remaining in Ivory Coast and many thousands more moving over the border into neighbouring Liberia. There is a lack of provision of safe water and, working with our in-country humanitarian team, we have committed to help relieve the plight of the refugees.
Presently, there is enormous pressure on resources and basic services are stretched to capacity, so we will provide what’s needed. We are progressing with our operations to get the essential water and sanitation supplies in place.”
