Jerry Can Challenge takes Soul Survivor by storm

Hundreds of young festivalgoers have taken up 'The Jerry Can Challenge' at Soul Survivor over the past few weeks, with plenty of grunts and groans, stretches and strains, even sweat and tears (thankfully no blood) expended in the cause of stepping into the shoes of children in Africa who have to carry heavy jerry cans filled with water.

The stand, which focused on the Turn on the Tap campaign for safe water in the developing world, challenged festivalgoers to see how long they could hold a jerry can filled with either 15liters (15kg) or 20liters (20kg) of water. As well as giving participants the chance to win a Turn on the Tap t-shirts, it also gave them an insight into what it might be like to walk for 4 miles carrying a can weighing 20kgs - the average distance that women and children have to walk for water in Africa and the average weight that they end up carrying.

"It was a brilliant week and the young people really took to the challenge," says Carly Peek, who looked after the stand in the Soul Survivor toolshed during Week A. "There were some guys who were totally crazy and just wouldn't put the jerry can down! There were also those who were really challenged to think about what life must be like for those who don't have clearn water available on tap. I really hope some of them go back and do something about it with their youth group."
